Radiates Through the Chapel

Trinity College’s chapel is a beautiful piece of twentieth-century neo-Gothic architecture, but the interaction with the sunset sky brought a whole new appreciation for the structure. The gold light of the sky comes through the open belfry, but electrical lighting elements that shine up the structure from beneath the belfry happened to also match the sunset color and the position along the horizon, producing the odd trompe l’oeil of the structure appearing to allow the viewer to see through the mountains in the distance to even more sky beyond.

A big, dramatic golden dome really stands out against a sky of dramatic Rayleigh-scattering-blue clouds, but views of the Connecticut State Capitol always leave me wondering what-ifs… This was the original site of Trinity College, which relocated to make way for this current structure. How would this high point in Hartford appear with Trinity here instead?

A bird’s eye view can shrink the impact of many human-made objects, but Calder’s “Stegosaurus” (1973) jumps from the foreground not only not only for its color, but also for the way in which it breaks the symmetry of the square in front of Hartford’s City Hall.

I recently moved into a new office with a huge, boring, blank wall totally ready for a huge, interesting, dramatic landscape. That naturally meant returning to one of my favorite land/cityscapes, this view of Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco, and Marin from sabbatical in 2017. A summer trip to the Netherlands provided me with opportunities for some incredible shots this summer—I’m excited to share them soon. Let’s paradoxically lead of with a photograph from the end of the trip: the sunset over Schiphol Aiport. The solarpunk utopian Netherlands mix of public transit and greenspace is on display here and it will quickly become an obvious theme throughout the other pictures from my trip.

Returning to this viewpoint year after year, I’ve watched as the small cluster of white buildings (trailers?) at the bottom of this canyon keeps growing. Worksite? Settlement? Cult? Who knows, but I feel like there’s a good noir mystery to be written from this starting point.

Delicate, not-fully-chlorophyll’ed spring foliage may be bright on its own, but being the only objects still tall enough to catch the sunlight once Trinity’s Long Walk gets in the way really makes the campus’s trees stand out all the more.
