There’s a moment when the light of the Long Walk matches the brightness of the blue hour light remaining in the sky. When that moment happens to coincide with an unusually warm October night, the connection to memory locks in.
A mixture of wide-angle lens distortion and “impossible” aerial drone viewpoint make for brain-twisting images of already strange and transient phenomena, like the chairs and stage of Trinity College’s Commencement Ceremony arrayed on the quad.
Trinity sings of being “‘Neath the Elms” for our alma mater, but I haven’t been able to capture that experience at Commencement quite so literally prior to now.
A springtime stroll along Trinity’s Long Walk has more leaf-generated shade every day.
Final exam week is winding down, which means we can finally emerge from our Neo-Gothic cocoons and enjoy Trinity’s perfect spring campus.
Leaves are long gone, buds have yet to quite emerge, and the colorful display from my earlier picture down Summit Street exists only in that photograph.
When showing this picture of Trinity College’s chapel and Long Walk to a fellow alum, his first question was, “Where did you go to take this?” A near-lifetime of seeing the same perspectives from the same high points on campus made a shot like this one a complete surprise—a reaction that I’m always happy to provide.
The impossibility of this particular view of Trinity’s Long Walk keeps my eye returning to the perspective line as the building stretches away in the distance but doesn’t leave the frame.
When peak foliage arrives at Trinity, there’s a perfect moment to capture it and I’m happy to say that I think I timed it perfectly in this particular case.
The administration’s end of the Long Walk, with handy HR and deans’ offices, isn’t one I visit as frequently but it’s no less beautiful in the fall.
A refuge amongst the trees–Hartford’s Trinity College or Middle-earth’s Rivendell? Flying my drone this weekend, I found a previously-unexplored angle from which to capture our campus and found a new perception of home.
