Miatas with Big Wings

MiataCon brought an array of modified-beyond-recognition Miatas to Lime Rock Park—with many of them sporting monster wings.

The 10-year-old in me has to admit that they look neat.

Of course, their goals vis-à-vis downforce weren’t always accomplished. (Believe it or not, the blue Miata managed to avoid colliding with the McDonald’s-colored Miata.)

Three Views of the Hartford Marathon

The Hartford Marathon traveled past our house and provided an opportunity to capture some weirdly empty-of-cars/full-of-runners streets.

Marathoners I

Like molecules through a chromatographic column, the runners spaced farther and farther apart as the race went.

Marathoners III

The views closer to home produced intense shadows best viewed in black and white.

Jumping Action from the VIP

Though dramatic shots of jumping horses are ubiquitous in the equestrian world, I think ones that present them in the context of the setting, alongside the audience and with a real sense for the space, are somewhat rarer. Kim Thiry ring Quick Silver can het Farasohof was in the Jumping Mechelen CSI2* right next to the VIP audience who could have reached out and touched the last jump in the course.

Turn and Burn

This CSI5* speed class pushed riders to their limit; few managed the entire course with neither rail nor speed penalties. I was capturing photographs from the last turn in the course, where riders who were still jumping clean turning to blast down the final line to the finish. Watching them put on a final burst of massive speed was dramatic, as in this case with Hans-Dieter Dreher and his mount Jiniki.

Rowing Race on the Connecticut River

This image is definitely worth a click through to Flickr for the full-sized version. All those little boats on the Connecticut River are rowers racing or preparing to race, and the hints of colors and patterns in the solid blue of water match well with the early hints of color and patterns of changing foliage in the expanse of green leaves.

Pristine Soccer Field

Summer efforts brought a beautifully pristine soccer field to life at Trinity. From above, I appreciate even more the gentle slope of the hills that arranges the rest of campus in the background. The little chimneys of Northam peak up on the left side of the image in a way I find particularly appealing.

Winning the Puissance

This winning moment from CSI Ommen’s Saturday-night puissance (jumping an increasingly tall wall of hollow blocks) is impressive to me for two reasons. The most obvious is the incredible height this horse is successfully clearing. Just as amazing to this American is the huge turnout of spectators present in both the foreground and background—far beyond what is seen at most US events.

I Can See My House From Here

Peak foliage on Trinity College’s campus looks as effulgent as always, but there’s an added perk in being able to see my downtown-Hartford home in the same shot. (It helps that the building is 27 stories tall, I’ll admit…)

A St. Lawrence Remainder

For the past decade (nearly, anyway), I’ve been bringing you pictures from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. With my move to Trinity, I’m running through my final stock of my favorite images. I suspect these will be the last images of St. Lawrence I post (no promises), so it seems fitting that they capture the campus at its most St.-Lawrence-y: crisp autumn evening, foliage lit up by campus fixtures, with a big North Country sunset on the horizon.

Pony Finals 2022 Day 3

After exploring the first two days of Pony Finals 2022, we’ve reached the last day of my coverage. The positive vibes are rolling…

Pony Finals 2022 Day 3 I

But already, there are some sad faces as horses and ponies start to ship out.

Pony Finals 2022 Day 3 II

The warm-up ring is filled no only with young equestrians pursuing its eponymous activity, but also trial rides for folks considering purchasing or leasing.

Pony Finals 2022 Day 3 IV

Pony Finals 2022 Day 3 VI really enjoy the “follow the leader” pattern of this image.

Over by the Rolex, a loner rider slowly walks back to the barn.

Pony Finals 2022 Day 3 VII

I love the energy of an excited rider, fresh out of the ring after a great ride. Hanging out by the Rolex’s in gate gives me the perfect opportunity to captures shots like these.

Overlooking the scene gives me some opportunity to make additions to a recent photographic trope I’ve favored: pictures of a grand scene with an obvious place from which a view can watch.

Can you see the pony jumping in the distance in each of these shots?
