The retro-futurist art of Simon Stålenhag places intimate, perhaps even old-fashioned scenes in the foreground of images with strange, alien machines in the distance. A lone pair of nighttime snackers waiting at a slab-sided friterie trailer in the environs of the authentically 1950s Atomium represented such a real-world manifestation of the phenomenon that I had to stop and capture the scene.
The scale of Belgium’s Atomium seems to be poorly captured in pictures—perhaps because it’s difficult to capture the structure and its surroundings together, or perhaps because the 102-m-tall structure so resembles something we might be more comfortable seeing at 10 m scale. The shrinking lines of sculptural lampposts helps a bit, but it’s night that I believe truly fixes the scale issue. See the band of red in the topmost sphere? That band is the array of full-length windows of the restaurant at the top of the structure, and the red light is the lighting inside.

A fog of Macbeth/Shakespeare/Weird-Sisters-level strangeness descended on Hartford last night.
This winning moment from CSI Ommen’s Saturday-night puissance (jumping an increasingly tall wall of hollow blocks) is impressive to me for two reasons. The most obvious is the incredible height this horse is successfully clearing. Just as amazing to this American is the huge turnout of spectators present in both the foreground and background—far beyond what is seen at most US events.

In comparison with landscape and sports photography, I’m far less experienced with the world of street photography. On this particular November evening on the streets of Dublin, I thought it might be fun to push my technical limits a bit.

Each winter, a skating rink is frozen into the southern end of Bushnell Park. The neighborhood gains a new sort of place to gather and the city gains that extra pop of brightness and life.
The incongruity of a brick church and centuries-old burial ground amidst modern urban architecture perhaps aligns with posting summer pictures in early January. Hopefully both aspects brighten the New Year!
I’m sure it’s perfectly innocent, but having an octagonal tower with a vague-yet-tech-themed name glowing atop it shouts “sinister cyberpunk corporation.”
I.M. Pei really outdid himself with the design of Hartford’s Bushnell Tower. While the building is carefully monochrome during the day, I love the various colors exploding from the windows at night.
Does anything better match the dome of a capitol than fireworks in the sky and celebratory crowds in a park beneath?
I’ve shown a lot of images of Travelers Tower (one of my favorite pieces of architecture in Hartford), but in my tradition of showing the viewer and the view, this picture also captures the vantage point in Bushnell Tower where those images were taken.
