The weekend’s Capitol Groove concert brought thousands together to watch acts like Khruangbin and Thundercat jam in Bushnell Park.
This winning moment from CSI Ommen’s Saturday-night puissance (jumping an increasingly tall wall of hollow blocks) is impressive to me for two reasons. The most obvious is the incredible height this horse is successfully clearing. Just as amazing to this American is the huge turnout of spectators present in both the foreground and background—far beyond what is seen at most US events.

I took the photo along a cliffside during a traditional Balinese ceremony right after sunset. It is too dark to see the cliff in the background of the picture, but the light from the fire and people’s smartphones is bright and contrasting. Nearly every single viewer is observing the ceremony through a smartphone or camera creating a technological gaze.
Though the symmetry of Notre Dame de Paris stands out from the mere mortal constructs around it, I enjoy playing the game of identifying the breaks in its symmetry. Some of those are small, like the different statues around the building. Others are more significant, like the triangle in place or an arch above the left-most set of doors.
