The Custom House at Blue Hour

2024-May-03 adohertyhLeave a comment

This image of Dublin’s Custom House presents some delightful contrasts—not only between the House itself and its more modern neighboring structures, but also between the silhouetted lamp whose bulb was conveniently out and its nearby glowing peers.

Bridges over the River Liffey shift from the historical to the more modern in pace with the architecture.

Night on the Streets of Dublin

In comparison with landscape and sports photography, I’m far less experienced with the world of street photography. On this particular November evening on the streets of Dublin, I thought it might be fun to push my technical limits a bit.

Antique and futuristic aesthetics collide and reflect on the River Liffey in Dublin.

Stills of Pearse Lyons

2024-Mar-22 adohertyh1 Comment

Pearse Lyons Distillery was constructed in a long-disused church in Dublin. The full renovation of the space included replacing the original (and long-damaged) stained glass with whiskey-focused glass. (Check out the glass still in the window behind the copper stills!)

Scope of the Gaol

Another view of the interior of Kilmainham Gaol further emphasizes the enormous enclosed volume—and the number of lives enclosed therein.

Beneath the Kilmainham Stairs

The enormous internal volume of Kilmainham Gaol’s later wing makes the iron stairs and bridges spanning it extremely imposing—which was, I suppose, kind of the point.

Ball in Gaol

The reclaiming of Kilmainham Gaol for some better use than supporting English imperialism has included its use in a variety of artistic projects. Those include the location for various films (more on that in an upcoming post), as well as for art installations like this odd twig sphere inside a cell.

Inside Kilmainham

In the corridors of Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, the specter of day (and freedom) seems to wash in around every corner.

Still, the array of colors found in the drab, gray walls. Would that have given any comfort to the people imprisoned here?

Small Homes

Down every Dublin alley is another fascinating vignette. These tiny structures, differentiated from their neighbors by their paint, are yet another example.

Old Amidst New

2023-Dec-15 adohertyhLeave a comment

At once (post)modern and ancient, Dublin is a city with many sides; I feel this image captures both. Amidst a see of mid-rise modern construction, this older building looks particularly decrepit with the enormous foliage astride it.

Dublin Barber

2023-Dec-04 adohertyhLeave a comment

The barbershop open at the mouth of a long street of shuttered, graffitied shops almost looks like a dressed set for a film; the visual interplay between the figure in the foreground and the distant figure at the end of the alley raises a question about their past or future interaction that I can’t answer.

Traffic Along the River Liffey

November rush-hour traffic in Dublin provides a glowing array down the street, but I have to imagine it’s more frustrating to be sitting in said traffic.
