Each winter, a skating rink is frozen into the southern end of Bushnell Park. The neighborhood gains a new sort of place to gather and the city gains that extra pop of brightness and life.

Welcoming Snow to Bushnell Park
Winter finally arrived (properly) to Hartford, Connecticut, and with it, Bushnell Park was transformed into perhaps its most charming version of itself. The tiny silhouettes of people among the glowing lamp posts and decorated trees brings to mind an urban Narnia.
Rooftop Yoga
In warmer weather, a yoga class is taught atop this golden building in my neighborhood. I wonder what it’s like to do yoga with a view?
Trinity College Under Snow
Perhaps the best mark of a place I love is one that keeps its charm throughout the whole year. I only really enjoyed the North Country during the blaze of autumn foliage and I only really enjoy Coachella Valley during the mild temperatures and wet(ter) weather of winter. By comparison, Trinity College is beautiful at every moment of the year. A multilayer of serious snow arrived this weekend and finally brought Trinity into Winter Mode, confirming that this place is basically always fantastical.
Mad Scientist Skyline
Arcs of lightning through stormy clouds add a strong sense of the Frankensteinian to this summer image of Hartford’s skyline. The storm that just capped the city in snow will soon provide an opportunity for a different kind of mad scientist image.
Center Church with Fireworks
The incongruity of a brick church and centuries-old burial ground amidst modern urban architecture perhaps aligns with posting summer pictures in early January. Hopefully both aspects brighten the New Year!

Urban parks take my favorite gradient between nature and cityscape and turn it into a Heaviside function, stepping instantly from one to the other.
Back in the Air
After an unfortunate run-in with a tree on a windy day, my drone is repaired and back in the air. A big, dramatic sunset scene of Trinity College is the perfect capstone for may last day at work this semester. The repaired chapel seemed a fitting parallel to the repaired quadcopter.
Infosys Hub
I’m sure it’s perfectly innocent, but having an octagonal tower with a vague-yet-tech-themed name glowing atop it shouts “sinister cyberpunk corporation.”
Gates Quad
On an otherwise rectilinear campus, the gentile bubble-arcs of Trinity College’s Gates Quad provide a relaxing geometry that mirrors the true uses of a quad in student life.
Trinity on a Hilltop Above Hartford
All along the this rise are the buildings of Trinity college: the Raether Library, Clement Chemistry Building, Northam Hall, the Chapel, and High Rise. Looking at them dramatically standing against the setting sun, I knew what I was thankful for this year: being here in Hartford, working at Trinity.
(Just as I can see my home from work, this is evidence that I can see work from home.)

I.M. Pei really outdid himself with the design of Hartford’s Bushnell Tower. While the building is carefully monochrome during the day, I love the various colors exploding from the windows at night.

Saturday marked a final day of warm weather and sunshine before the cold and dark and rain of November closed in on us. The Hartford skyline was positively glowing.
