#GRIDLIFE Up in the Air

The final decision on whether or not to attend this year’s #GRIDLIFE Circuit Legends in Lime Rock will depend on weather, meaning it’s currently up in the air. I thought I might match that with some shots from last year’s event of cars literally “up in the air.”

Black Silvia

This black Nissan Silvia was a sinister presence at #GRIDLIFE last year, but the reflections from its surfaces killed the dark-and-menancing tone. I’d typically address this with a polarizer, but didn’t have one handy. Luckily, some polarized sunglasses did the trick. I rather like the effect of the bokeh’ed-out lens in front of the car, like a bodyguard waving away paparazzi.

More from the #GRIDLIFE Pits

#GRIDLIFE Circuit Legends last fall was an incredible photographic legend—way more than could fit in just one post. We’re back again, this time focusing on happenings in the pits (which were open to the crowds.)

This black Nissan GT-R R34 was lurking in the shadows.

The gold shades on this S2000 driver were extra-dramatic with a fisheye lens.

Rounding out the action, this C5 Corvette rumbled down the pit lane. Given that it and the R34 share similar tail lights and paint jobs, the similarity in style seemed justified.

The Gate and the Devil Z

I’ve had an attraction to Datsun Z cars since I read Wangan Midnight as a teenager and first encountered the “Devil Z”. Around the Bay Area, plenty of these cars are still running, and those that have survived this long come to resemble the style goals of their owners. That might be the “rough style” Z I photographed in Berkeley, or this super-clean example that was kind enough to park in the Marin Headlands overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco.

Berkeley’s Devil Z

Legendary tuned cars abound in manga and anime—the overpowered monsters in unassuming guise who reveal their true (horse)power in the last seven minutes of each episode. In at least two that jump to mind (Wangan Midnight and Shakotan Boogie), Datsun Z cars are the chief culprits.

This particular Z has been hanging out in Berkeley’s South Campus neighborhood as long as anyone can remember, delivering supplies to I.B.’s Hoagies. Each year, it’s modified a little further towards some ultimate form that exists in the mind of its owner. In the mean time, I love the idea of this rough style monster out on delivery service.
