Though I missed it when I originally processed them, I was entertained to look back at this pair of shots from early spring in Salisbury, Connecticut—one pointing northeast and the other pointing southeast. The light of the rising sun is visible in the distance in both directions where the shadow of the mountain over town is absent.
Delicate, not-fully-chlorophyll’ed spring foliage may be bright on its own, but being the only objects still tall enough to catch the sunlight once Trinity’s Long Walk gets in the way really makes the campus’s trees stand out all the more.
Though a city might not seem like the most obvious place to celebrate Earth Day, I’ve honestly been astonished since my move to Hartford just how many big old trees shelter the city. Between the greenery and the public transportation, this place gives me some optimism.
Hartford’s Frog Hollow neighborhood is home to Broad Street, seen at the left side of this image. Just beyond its bounds is downtown Hartford. Until flying my drone, I had never seen the two in contrast like this. They make quite a pair.
Perfect, breezy, warm, and effulgent spring days have sprawled across Trinity’s campus, rather like students on the quad. Grading papers in my office can at least be softened by an open window and the resulting smell of flowers.
Piper riding Sundae at Kent has provided some opportunities for charming shots, like this one that happened to align perfectly with the cross in the bottom of their school seal.
Trinity College’s Chapel is encrusted and decorated with two types of brightwork: both snow and scaffolding.
As much as I touted the glory of humble Civics bloodying the noses of prestigious vehicles, there’s a contrapositive joy from seeing an expensive car like an AMG GT devouring racetrack.
There’s something about seeing humble (but race-prepped) Civics going toe to toe with drastically more traditionally quick (and expensive) vehicles that’s very satisfying. In addition to what I’m sure are serious weight-reduction, suspension, and power improvements, the dramatic aero makes a big difference.
They say Miata stands for, “Miata Is Always The Answer,” but in this case I suspect the question was, “What has an adorable little face nestled amongst some serious race prep?”
Bright sunshine scatters from treetops and roof peaks in Hartford. Buds begin to swell on branches around Trinity’s campus. When the weather is warm, it’s easy to feel that spring is just around the corner.
Orange, black, and ready to race. My favorite detail in this BMW is the hole cut in the hood to accommodate the engine.
Imagery of JDM classics makes them seem larger-than-life, but a side-by-side image with everyday people reveals just how compact cars like the Mazda RX-7 were.
#GRIDLIFE Circuit Legends last fall was an incredible photographic legend—way more than could fit in just one post. We’re back again, this time focusing on happenings in the pits (which were open to the crowds.)
This black Nissan GT-R R34 was lurking in the shadows.
The gold shades on this S2000 driver were extra-dramatic with a fisheye lens.
Rounding out the action, this C5 Corvette rumbled down the pit lane. Given that it and the R34 share similar tail lights and paint jobs, the similarity in style seemed justified.
As the culmination of efforts that began in July 2023, moving an 800-lbs optical table into a third-story window of Clement Chemistry Building via forklift was remarkably less dramatic than might be expected. Once the window was removed, the rigging company made short work of the move—and were nice enough to let me get some shots of them in action with my drone.
