Glowing Handrail
The lighting on this particular evening on San Francisco’s waterfront was spectacular and created this interesting effect as if the handrail on this pier were illuminated. It makes the Bay Bridge seem much more futuristic if you ask me.
The Olympics (the mountains)
Snow peaked, and with a nice alpenglow, the Olympic mountains in the morning are one of the more spectacular sights to be seen from Seattle (behind, of course, the massive Mt. Rainier which looms over the city). On this unusually calm, clear (not to mention cold) morning I was able to grab this shot of Puget Sound in front of the Olympics, along with two Ferries making the Fauntleroy-Vashon run.
‘Tis slightly past the season
There’s a holly tree in my parents’ back yard which in the winter seemingly attracts every bird in the area. It also happens to be about the most colorful thing in the Northwest (apart from the sunrises/sunsets).
Driftwood
Another shot with my new Christmas present, I thought the texture of this driftwood was neat, especially in the light I found that morning.
Alpine Clock tower
Captured on the same trip that gave me the opportunity to capture the previous shots of Obergurgl I grabbed this shot from closer to the center of the village. I thought he combination of the pointy clock tower and the mountains which virtually encircle the village was pretty neat.
Beach Cairn
I went down to the beach to try out my new Christmas present on this fine PNW morning. I’ll have to admit that I constructed the mini-cairn myself, but I thought the texture in the rocks and on the rock surface was cool so I decided to post it anyway. I might have to try to pose things and create shots more often.
Happy New Year! Urban Canyon during the Day
First off, Happy new year! Been an interesting year and here’s to another interesting year full of interesting photos.
The subject of this photo is familiar, previously appearing at night. If you look closely you might even spy the photographer of the previous shot.
Urban Sunset
Cityscapes, especially at sunset, are a particularly wonderous thing. The light reflecting off of glass, the vistas down the urban canyons, it is really a sight to behold.
Merry Christmas! Obergurgl
Another shot of Obergurgl, this time in the morning from the University Center where the conference was that I was attending. Obergurgl was just spectacular, though a little resort-y and this shot gives you an idea of what the bulk of the village looks like.

Totem Pole
I captured this shot on this past summer’s trip to Vancouver, BC and the University of British Columbia. These totem poles really are a beautiful part of the indigenous culture of the PNW and its nice that UBC represents this culture on their campus.
Redwoods
Here’s a shot I captured during an excursion to Portola Redwoods state park in northern California. I didn’t have my DSLR with me and so I was stuck with my iPhone but I figured that I would see what I could do with an iPhone shot with my usual suite of photo tools.
Alpine Village
On my recent European adventure I went out for a short afternoon walk which took me into the hills at the end of the valley beyond Obergurgl, Austria. From here I was able to grab this shot of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl and several surrounding chairlifts. It was still a little early in the season but many of the lifts were operating and people were starting to trickle in to these villages. Anyway the whole valley is incredibly picturesque and I will definitely have to return one day.
High Finance
Skyscrapers really are marvels of engineering. Just think about what it takes to erect one of these massive buildings. I captured this shot in the financial district of San Francisco on a recent outing and decided to see what I could capture by pointing my wide angle lens straight up at some buildings from the sidewalk. Looking up at the sky like this really makes you feel small.
Double feature: Frozen Stream
On the same European adventure to the alpine village of Obergurgl in Tyrol, Austria, I was out for a walk when I captured this shot of a creek running near the village in the process of freezing over. The ice is interesting to look at but the semi-abandoned outbuilding on the bank. It doesn’t appear to be in active service, as evidenced by the partially ajar door, nor is there an obvious way to get down to the entrance, though perhaps without the snow and ice there’s path down the cliff face or maybe even some sort of connection to a cave in the cliff. One can only guess at what function this building does or once did serve.
Decaseconds
