This image is definitely worth a click through to Flickr for the full-sized version. All those little boats on the Connecticut River are rowers racing or preparing to race, and the hints of colors and patterns in the solid blue of water match well with the early hints of color and patterns of changing foliage in the expanse of green leaves.
This Nissan was serving as a camera car, keeping pace behind drifters and recording their antics. Though those shots are dramatic, the most engaging to me is this one of the driver preparing and consulting with another member of her team before an upcoming run.
Summer efforts brought a beautifully pristine soccer field to life at Trinity. From above, I appreciate even more the gentle slope of the hills that arranges the rest of campus in the background. The little chimneys of Northam peak up on the left side of the image in a way I find particularly appealing.
This dense assemblage of dormitories at Trinity College was long referred to as the “concrete jungle”, but it’s now getting a major upgrade and the majority of the concrete for which it was named is missing. Will it return? I’ll be curious to find out!
Rules make for symmetry-breaking behavior. Bicycles traveling above 30 kph in the Netherlands require the rider to have a helmet. This means that bikes are either clearly much slower or, once they’re fast enough to demand a helmet, a lot faster.
Summer construction is bringing new buildings to Trinity—in this case, a much-needed update to the fitness center. These are the kinds of drone shots that are moderately interesting in the moment and downright fascinating in futures years, once the campus stands permanently changed.
New drone-facilitated angles and new views combine sights, like Northam Hall and Hartford beyond it, that I never thought I’d be able to combine in a single image.
A great delight of moving to Hartford was finding myself with morning views that excite and motivate me. Even when the sky itself is flat, the fog in the valley provides a smoothly varying topography to contrast the angular structure of the skyline.

This block of neo-gothic dormitories at Trinity College was, I discovered last week, not just the place where I spent several of my own years; it was also home to my father-in-law 40 years earlier.
I recently moved into a new office with a huge, boring, blank wall totally ready for a huge, interesting, dramatic landscape. That naturally meant returning to one of my favorite land/cityscapes, this view of Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco, and Marin from sabbatical in 2017. Amid the historic architecture, the riot of midsummer greenery, and the chaos of boats on the canals of Amsterdam, I appreciated the stillness and calm of the man relaxing in the window.
Though not perhaps the traditional matchup for either Chevrolet or Acura, this pair dueled through a #GRIDLIFE Touring Car race in a surprisingly even duel.
The Netherlands’ relationship with water and land is such a long and complicated one. This site, Ommermars Natuurspeeltuin (which I believe translates to “nature playground”—Dutch speakers, get in the comments!), feels like it might be prepared to cast some sort of deep, ancient magic to influence that relationship.
This is a sight I haven’t seen since I lived in the Bay Area: a layer of low-lying clouds caused by a temperature inversion that look remarkably like the marine layer. Though I know the origins aren’t the same in the Central Valley of Connecticut, that mix of perfectly clear sky and rolling clouds brought me back in time and made rising at dawn worth it.
