Though even April doesn’t guarantee and escape from blizzards in New England, I’m nonetheless cathartically purging myself of wintery aesthetics, like I.M. Pei’s Bushnell Tower standing proud at the edge of Hartford’s downtown.
Despite years of living across the street from this charming skating rink in Bushnell Park, I’ve somehow never managed to capture good images of the action before this year. With the light of the full moon in the background, Hartford residents queued up for a chance on the ice.

The roof replacement at 1 Gold St. required a crane to reach above the 27th floor and deliver materials, and its emplacement closed Gold St. itself for a month. With all of that scale and drama, I guess I thought that the crane would be… taller? (Of course, it’s not in its “active” configuration in this shot.)
There’s an excellent playground in Hartford’s Bushnell Park. Its large jungle gym, visible with its bright yellow and white upper structure in the foreground, is a miniature model of the State Capitol, found on the other side of the park.
Golden light, golden buildings, green colors in the park. Flying a drone can unveil a new perspective from an altitude that wouldn’t be accessible otherwise, but it can also just give a boat’s-eye view with a lot less paddling.
A Romantic sunset sky with lots of highly textured clouds makes a perfect companion for the rough but linear concrete forms of I.M. Pei’s Bushnell Tower.
A great sunset over Bushnell Park is well-matched by reflections from the windows of Bushnell Tower.

Legend has it that the southern face of Bushnell Tower is nearly windowless because it was meant to closely face a mirror twin of the building (never constructed); now it remains a mysterious facade that adds character to the historic structure.

A great delight of moving to Hartford was finding myself with morning views that excite and motivate me. Even when the sky itself is flat, the fog in the valley provides a smoothly varying topography to contrast the angular structure of the skyline.
Flying a drone in downtown Hartford requires some extra permissions, but they’re worth chasing for the opportunity to capture shots like this one: Bushnell Tower, the State Capitol, and a rain-checked fireworks display arrayed above Bushnell Park.
