A lot of the houses in North Berkeley look like they would make great dollhouses, or part of a great ersatz miniature town, if only you could shrink them down. We can always pretend, eh?
High Country Ponies
Fall Vista
The Appalachians aren’t my favorite mountain range but they’re in the top 5. The vistas from the AT are pretty spectacular.
Appalachian Horizons
The views from the Roan highlands are really something else.
Appalachian Rocks
You don’t have to pass through these rocks on the Appalachian trail in the Grayson Highlands, but its a lot more fun if you do.
Trail Buddies
Another shot of the ponies in the Grayson Highlands in southwest Virgina. These ones came up shamelessly begging for food (which, as per the signs posted, we declined to provide). When we declined to feed them they ambled on their merry way.
Sailing
It’s not hard to imagine why folks would go out sailing on a nice day like this on pictured here in the Bay Area.
Heron and Friends
While the low water level of Buckeye Lake this past summer was terrible for boating and summer lake fun, it was good for checking out Herons and ducks. Here a Heron wades searching for its next meal, which it caught just moments later.

Wild Ponies!
To keep the Grayson Highlands bald a herd of “wild” ponies is allowed to roam to keep the vegetation in check. The ponies are feral, but they’re not really shy around humans.
This particular pony was pretty popular!
Creek Crossing
Compared with some crossings in the area this bridge feels a little over-engineered. Not that I’m complaining about the fact that it has handrails on both sides.
The Rush
I love the way water crashes through rocks.
Miniature Library
I can’t think of an appropriate thing to say about the Bancroft Library at the University of California so I’ll leave a picture instead.
The Alps
One of the good things I can say about grad school is that it gave me the opportunity to travel to and see places that I never would have otherwise, like the Austrian Alps. The Alps really are quite spectacular and there’s nothing quite like flying into Innsbruck.
