Watauga lake is a pretty spectacular man made lake which, judging by the view down the other side of Watauga Dam (the top of which makes up part of the Appalachia Trail) used to be a pretty spectacular river valley.

Art Wall
The mosaics on Philadelphia’s South Street are definitely something to see, and a nice contrast to the red brick buildings.
Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
It’s not one of the more iconic lighthouses of the outer banks (like Cape Hateras or Bodie Island) but the diminutive Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse on Roanoke Island (yeah, that Roanoke) has a certain charm.
In the Mist
On the way back from the Outer Banks, a perfect storm of conditions led to this amazing mist over a Watauga Lake. As the mist lifted this small island came into view like some kind of mini magical realm (or the setting for some kind of horror film).
Boulders
Despite a failure properly plan the outing leading to a hike that was 3 times as long as anticipated, the trip to the Channels of Virginia near Abingdon were well worth the extra effort. I’ll definitely be coming back.
Seaweed
Puget Sound is great, but the beaches are not exactly filled with nice clean sand.
Huguenot Church
Charleston is full of churches, so many that it has the nick name Holy City. Among them is the historic Huguenot Church which, while it is not the largest is definitely one of the most distinctive, and I’d say my favorite.
Cape Hatteras
The Cape Hatteras light house, though not quite in its original location, is a pretty iconic site (and sight) in the Outer Banks. Too bad you can’t climb it in the early spring!
Independence Hall
Keeping with the theme of great things being surprisingly small, Independence Hall.
Liberty Bell
Apart from being a lot smaller than I expected, being able to get so close to the Liberty Bell in person is amazing.
Flag
I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is but there’s something very inviting about the iconic Charleston single houses. Maybe it’s the welcoming looking piazzas, or maybe it’s the palmetto’s standing guard.
Bodie Island Lighthouse
I love the lighthouses in the outer banks but I’ll have to come back later in the season so that I can climb the towers!
Dunes
Even in early march the sandy beaches of the outer banks are really spectacular.
Miniature Wright Flyer
At the Wright Brothers National Memorial in the Outer Banks there’s a bronze statue of the launching of the Wright flyer. From the top of the hill overlooking the scene its hard to tell the difference between the bronze figures and the people looking at the statue, so that they all look like little figurines.
Sumter Guns
Very little of the civil war era portions of fort Sumter in Charleston’s harbor exist, but the parts that do give you an impression of how imposing the fort must have been in its day.
