Another shot of the ponies in the Grayson Highlands in southwest Virgina. These ones came up shamelessly begging for food (which, as per the signs posted, we declined to provide). When we declined to feed them they ambled on their merry way.
While the low water level of Buckeye Lake this past summer was terrible for boating and summer lake fun, it was good for checking out Herons and ducks. Here a Heron wades searching for its next meal, which it caught just moments later.
To keep the Grayson Highlands bald a herd of “wild” ponies is allowed to roam to keep the vegetation in check. The ponies are feral, but they’re not really shy around humans.
When the water is too high the trail (pictured!) is impassible and it is necessary to take the high water trail. The trail is not impassible in this shot.
