The other day during a weekend grilling session on a beautiful day in the bay area I looked over and caught a glimpse of this super cool dragonfly chilling on a bamboo stalk. After snapping a few shots with my iPhone, I realized it wasn’t going anywhere so I grabbed my camera and tripod and grabbed some shots.
The rooms are not the only thing nice about KITP/UCSB.
The colors in Brazil were incredibly intense; the oversaturated blues and greens are just inescapable. Even in winter, everything is lush. But here, at the elegant, 1960s pool bar, the season is more obvious. There’s no way a scene this gorgeous would be so eerily abandoned at the height of summer.
Tower cranes are, without question, the coolest pieces of modern construction equipment. In order to reach these heights, the cranes actually lift and build themselves! This particular crane is working on building the replacement to Campbell Hall (which we’ve previously photographed being demolished.) On this particular morning, the clouds aligned in just the right way with the arc of the crane and produced this composition.
The hills that rise above Berkeley and the east bay are home to some of the most spectacular vistas — when the weather is nice. On this particular day we were just lucky enough to get a patch of blue sky peaking through the bleak grey clouds, which was enough to completely light up the east bay while leaving the gloom looming over the city.
Berkeley is host to all manner of landscaping choices, and on this particular day I found a block or so which was completely dominated by an eastern aesthetic. I found the contrast of the jade with the untreated wood, as well as the lack of parallel lines, especially interesting. The effect was completed by the backdrop of Japanese maples and bamboo.

The Berkeley Public Libraries recently remodeled their north branch, nestled at the bottom of the Berkeley hills in North Berkeley. It’s actually quite attractive, in stark contrast to a lot of the public buildings in the east bay.
During a brief jaunt through Berkeley Marina on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon I was able to catch this shot of an intrepid crew setting sail out into the San Francisco Bay and beyond.
I spent last weekend in surreal Palm Desert, California at a particular horse show, but had some time to sneak away from the action and wander the desert. I found this enormous, concrete pylon surrounded by desiccated shrubs and was almost intimidated by the whole sight. I kept waiting for the apes to start fighting around it.
