This week’s theme on Decaseconds is apparently athletic fields. In the suburban Chicago grid, little park oases like these are a delightful break from the monotony.

Escape the Suburbs
The gradient from dense, urban (and suburban) areas to rural and natural settings is one of my favorite photographic subjects—and the subject of most of my favorite photographs. In this particular aerial shot from the in-between area over Pennsylvania, the sun has mostly set, leaving shadows and a few orange reflections in the overly ordered geometry of subdivisions. Down the winding highway, beyond the hills, in the less-dense and more agrarian land, the sun still casts a warm glow.
California Coast
My last trip to La Jolla, CA gave me a chance to shoot from the summit of Mt. Soledad. I’m continually astonished by the degree to which nature has been remodeled by the folks who settled California.
Red flower
In keeping with my theme for the past week I’ve got a shot of a bright red flower. With their fantastic bright red color of the petals and the black markings in the center these flowers were just begging to be photographed. If anyone’s got any idea what kind of flowers these are I’d be interested to find out.
Lemons
Berkeley is completely filled with lemon trees bearing fruit which largely goes to waste. But what is a shame for the tree owners is a great thing for photographers because the texture and color of the fruit really pops against a beautiful blue sky on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
Christmas Purple
Though the suburbs can be an ugly place, at times, there’s no time when they become more attractive than the Holiday season. I was particularly fascinated by the way the individual red, blue, green, and yellow lights in the front porch of this house blended together to dye the whole scene violet. It speaks to the spectroscopic subtleties of Christmas lights that a similar display in the adjacent house produces very different results.
