Spring Blossoms
One of the undeniably good things about the bay area is the unwaveringly pleasant weather we experience here. Since it’s been so nice outside recently I felt compelled to post this shot I captured last spring.
Discovery Sunset
Another spectacular Seattle sunset over Puget Sound and the Olympics, this time from Magnolia’s Discovery Park. This made more spectacular by the fact that it was the dead of winter and the vista was only marred by some wispy clouds and just the lightest of hazes.
Sabertoothed
I certainly wouldn’t want to have come up against one of these in the wilds of prehistoric California.
Toy Seattle
I recently received a Lensbaby Composer, and while I was in Seattle I decided to try to figure out how to use it. It is definitely harder than it looks, and the live preview (with the ability to zoom) is a life saver when it comes to shooting pictures that are in focus, especially when shooting distant objects (arguable this is not what it was meant for). Getting the “sweet spot” just right can be a challenge in these circumstances. That said, it does allow the photographer to frame their subjects in a very neat way, and in a very authentic way as well.
Shoshone Falls
On my recent trip I had an occasion to stop at Shoshone falls, near Twin Falls, Idaho. Sometimes nature is amazing.
Thanksgiving Point
Thanksgiving point was an interesting locale, very touristy but with an odd mixture of amenities.
Beach Cairn
I went down to the beach to try out my new Christmas present on this fine PNW morning. I’ll have to admit that I constructed the mini-cairn myself, but I thought the texture in the rocks and on the rock surface was cool so I decided to post it anyway. I might have to try to pose things and create shots more often.
Transamerica Pyramid
It’s undeniable that behind the Golden Gate bridge and Alcatraz the Transamerica Pyramid is one of the most recognizable features of the San Francisco skyline. Everyone’s used to the view of it embedded in the skyline but it looks completely different when viewed from the base, a less common perspective. It actually gives the impression of exaggerated perspective when viewed from the street beneath it, sort of like it disappears into infinity.
Surreal Berkeley Home
On a recent stroll through the hills east of Berkeley I came upon this house I had seen many times before but never really seen, you know? At first glance it looks like a perfectly reasonable home there’s something about the degree to which the landscaping in the foreground engulfs the home and the juxtaposition of this with the palm tree in the background that I really find fascinating. It looks like the kind of house that would be the setting for some sort of fantasy novel where a normal kid ends up going on some sort of magical adventure.
Sonoma Winery
The Napa and Sonoma vallies are just filled with an odd mixture of beautifully manicured lawns and working farms, sometimes even coexisting on the same property. This embodies the reality of viticulture, that it all starts in the fields.
Pictured here I’ve got a picture of the Ram’s Gate Winery on a beautiful spring day. The nice cloud detail and blue skies are contrasted with the simple architecture and field in a, I feel, particularly compelling manner.
Lemons
Berkeley is completely filled with lemon trees bearing fruit which largely goes to waste. But what is a shame for the tree owners is a great thing for photographers because the texture and color of the fruit really pops against a beautiful blue sky on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
The Palo Alto
This is an old one of mine that I thought would be nice to put up on the blog. Pictured is the Palo Alto, a concrete ship sunk off of Seacliff State Beach, as shot from New Brighton State Beach. I would highly recommend a drive down California’s Central Coast for anyone looking for some great photo ops!
