Rainy Hotel Afternoon

Columbus Nightfield
Rainy nights make for the best hotel stays; when the city is a strange mix of old brick and modern blah* (hello, Columbus!), a cloudy sky lit by unnatural light matches the alienating mood.
*Where “blah” = solid but uninspired office buildings.
Heron and Friends
While the low water level of Buckeye Lake this past summer was terrible for boating and summer lake fun, it was good for checking out Herons and ducks. Here a Heron wades searching for its next meal, which it caught just moments later.
Tower in the Rain
This domed building, poking above the trees and through a sudden rainstorm outside Columbus, Ohio, reminds me of nothing more than a mage’s tower. I bet there’s treasure at the top!
Country Road
There’s something very midwestern about the narrow, poorly marked roads that weave in and out of plots of farm. Mostly straight but somehow you can’t always see the horizon, dotted with the occasional farm house or barn.

You may not be able to get your boat out on the lake right now, but the upside is that you have a plot with a view west over the lake that’s not all bad.
Soy Beans For Miles
For the most part I don’t find the vast unending crops of the midwest all that aesthetically pleasing. But I have to admit that early in the morning there’s something about the way that the newly risen sun hits a few patches of mist here and there over these fields that is kind of captivating.
Streets of Storm
We recently spent an evening by the Columbus Convention Center. As I explored the neighborhood, I was struck by the combinations of tiny, earlier buildings (lik the wee gray one in the center) and new, shiny, modern behemoths. Columbus seems to be in the process of figuring out if it wants to be Pittsburgh or Cleveland.
