New England has a lot of forest remaining. That might seem obvious, but in comparison to places like the UK (where millennia of human activity have annihilated most of the forests), it can be a bit startling.

I believe that at one point in the 19th c., Massachusetts was almost completely deforested, because all the firewood was needed for heating homes. The soil is stony and not so great for growing stuff, so once there were alternatives, all the trees grew back. . . .
